What would you snatch up if you had to run out of your home because it was on fire? Last night A grabbed his laptop and back-up hard drive, I seized my darling little cat and stuffed her into her travel box in one smooth movement and grabbed my beloved childhood toy Threadbare Tedbear. At first, as we all stood outside shivering and watched as four fire engines' worth of firefighters struggle to conquer the blaze, I thought that I could not possibly lose my home and recover. Not after everything else that has happened the past 3 years.
Then, as the fire showed signs of spreading and a chunk of the roof caved in I realised that A was standing next to me, cradling our darling little cat's box in his arms and knew that everything I needed was right there and, if necessary, everything else could be replaced or let go.
By 1.30 this morning, the blaze was out. The fire didn't spread to our end of the building and we were allowed back in. We, and everything around us, smells of smoke but we are safe and our home is safe. One staircase over, though, is a very different story. The flat where the fire started is gutted and the five below and across are soaked. I went over this morning to help a neighbour who had returned to try and salvage some items from her drenched flat, and standing in the stairwell I could see sky.
I was so worried when I read the first part, even panicky. I'm so glad you, A and kitty are ok. What a scary experience.
ReplyDeleteomg!!! I am so sorry to hear about this, that is beyond frightening. Very glad to hear that you all are safe and sound. Are you able to stay in your apartment? I am hoping that you are able to get that smoke smell out of everything and very glad that there is not water damage that would have ruined important papers and photos.
ReplyDeleteBe safe, sweetheart. thinkig of you guys...
Oh my!! How scary and devastating! I'm so glad you, A and the kitty are okay, hug them tight! I feel so sad for your neighbors. I hope they are able to get the help they need to get back on their feet.
ReplyDeleteI am so sorry to hear that. I'm glad you are ok.
ReplyDeleteOMG that's so scary! Glad to hear you and yours are fine and have a home to live in and, from what it sounds like, a renewed sense of love and appreciation. Many hugs!
ReplyDeleteI am so sorry! What a really scary nightmare... I am so relieved that your apartment did not burn, but coming that close to losing your home is still traumatic, and watching your neighbors deal with the unimaginable. Know you are in my thoughts.
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness! How horribly scary. I am glad that you, A, and your cat are all okay!
ReplyDeleteOh how scary!!! I'm so happy that you all are ok... Sending you a hug!
ReplyDeleteThat made terrifying READING. My heart goes thumpity thumpity at the very thought of you standing watching flames on YOUR building. So glad you're OK and A is OK and the darling cat is OK. Your poor neighbour.
ReplyDeleteHow terrible.
ReplyDeleteWhen I was at University our flat had a fire, it was petrifying and although we moved out for the rest of the year I still remember that acrid, smokey smell that permeated everything that we managed to rescue (only one room was gutted).
I am glad you and your home was relatively unscathed, and I hope your neighbours can recover some of what they have lost.
I am so, so glad you are all OK. that must have been terrifying.
ReplyDeletethinking of you and your neighbours xx
How frighteneing. I'm so sorry to hear you went through this. But I was really touched by the moment when you looked around at A and the kitty and knew that you had everything you needed. I completely get that.
