white noise

Sometime in the middle of last week I was talking to a patient when she suddenly grimaced.  I looked at her in concern, but she just asked "how long did it take you to get used to that?".  It was a couple of moments before I realised that she was talking about the wailing of the ambulance pulling up at the doors of A&E.  Sirens are finally back to being the background noise to my daily life.

Thank you for all your comments on my previous post.  You are all very lovely.  I think I am okay, or at least almost all the way there.  I have even unpacked the emergency getaway bag and can leave the house without being shoved.  We did buy a fire-proof box though, for vital papers and our passports and the like - but that just makes good sense :-)

  3. At my first flat, back when I was a kitten in my early 20s, I learnt to tune out the ambulances and police cars that used to hurtle up and down, what with the police station being at one end of the road and the hospital at the other. It took months, but by the time I moved out, I slept right through them. Car horns or shouting, though, snapped me awake in an instant. Very weird.

Glad you are feeling better and more secure. You've had a hell of a scare. I think I'd still be in hide-under-duvet mode.

  5. Amazing what we can get used to, isn't it? So glad you're feeling better, and yes, a fireproof box is just smart!

  7. It's great that you're much better now. If you don't plan on opening that fireproof safe too often, get some dessicant. Unless you live in a really dry area, it can get musty inside.

  8. My Dad was staying the other night and remarked how many sirens there were. I don't even notice them now. I am glad you are getting back to normal and not fearing the worse with every fire engin.
