ouch

The lifts are borked again at work.  In most places, this would be merely inconvenient; where I work it's downright daft.  As I toiled up to my office from the basement this morning, I chanced upon an elderly patient eyeing the "lifts out of order" signs with annoyance.
"It's organised chaos round here, isn't it?" he muttered.
"I'm very sorry about this, sir," I said.  "You're quite right, it's unacceptable really.  Would you like me to help you up the stairs?"
He accepted my offer, I shifted my armful of case-notes from one hip to the other, the patient took my free arm and, clutching the bannister with his other hand, we made a slow journey up two flights of stairs.  The patient grumbled all the way, and I couldn't disagree with him - we're a hospital.  Our patients are sick or elderly or both and working lifts should be taken for granted.
We reached the second floor where he his appointment was, and I walked him to the reception desk.  When we got there, he turned to me and said
"You couldn't organise a piss-up in a brewery, you lot.  That's what happens when we let immigrants run the NHS."

You're welcome.

  1. Oh Illanare, I'm so sorry. You certainly deserved better. On a happier note, your story reminded me of "The Final Analysis" attributed to Mother Teresa. I think it sums things up better than I ever could.

  2. oh my. i imagine that you were a lot more restrained than i would have been. ugh people who assume things based on a person appearance truly frustrate me!

the ignorance of some people is astounding - there are whole industries, the world over, that wouldn't be thriving today if it wasn't for immigrants and their willingness to truly graft.

if the NHS is stuffed [aren't all medical models in every country stuffed in some way?] it's the GOVERNMENTS fault through lack of funding end of story.

    xx

  3. My jaw properly dropped.
I am so sorry that happened to you.
I wouldn't have blamed you for taking him back down and abandoning him there :/

  4. Oh Illanare, what a nasty sod. Sometimes used to get elderly people like that when I did carework - dangerous mentalities, you've just got to be grateful they're not long for this world, eh?! That's what I always thought - your nasty ideas will be six feet under in a wee while so no need to engage with them!!
