My Not-In-Laws live on a farm on the outskirts of the NZ city which was hit by an earthquake less than 24 hours ago. We have been able to speak to them because they have an old-style phone and they are okay but without electrity, heat and water. There was minimal damage to their house and Not FIL says that the land seems fine. They have been given drinking water by a neighbouring farmer and have been using their bbq to cook meals but they are cold (it's winter down under).
I wish that we could just magic them here and look after them!

Scary! I live in earthquake country -- sending lots of best wishes their way. I'm so relieved to hear that they are ok!
ReplyDeleteAh yes I saw that earthquake in Christchurch on the news last night, 7.1 I think it was, which is of course sizeable. Their seemed to be quite a bit of damage around from the pics/video they showed last night but no one has been killed thankgod.
ReplyDeleteThey showed you one house where there was a crack in the ground running from the very front of the house right to the back of it, about 30cm wide and they put a tape measure down it and it goes down 70cm!!! That would freak me the hell out!
Hoping they manage to get some form of heating to warm them up and wrapping them in protective white light xxx
It was certainly lucky for them that it happened at 4.45am and NOT during the day! It would have been a whole other story if it had occurred in the daytime with alot more casualties. I'm in NZ myself (Wellington) and was in shock when I found out. I also have rellies in Christchurch who had little damage done to their house. Hope your in-laws don't have too much clean up ahead of them. The good news is power should be up and running again by now (not sure about the farm areas though)
